What is a CDN? Why Do Businesses Need to Use a CDN?
# 10:27 10/04/2025

Imagine the Internet as a giant library and each website a priceless book. If this massive library had only one central branch in the heart of a city, readers from remote areas would face long travel times to borrow a book. During peak hours, the library might even become overcrowded, slowing access for everyone.

This is where a CDN (Content Delivery Network) comes in — think of it as a network of local library branches spread across the globe. Instead of making a trip to the central library, you simply walk into the nearest branch, where a copy of your desired book is already available. As a result, wait times are drastically reduced, traffic is efficiently distributed, and even if the central library goes down, you can still access the information without interruption.

CDN: More than speed – It’s a security shield

A CDN isn't just a tool to accelerate websites — it also acts as a security layer. It helps mitigate DDoS attacks, protects sensitive data from online threats, and ensures website availability. With intelligent caching mechanisms, a CDN ensures your content is always accessible — no matter where in the world your users are located.

How does a CDN work?

A typical CDN system consists of the following key components:

  • Origin Server: The original source of your website's data (e.g., HTML files, videos, images, downloads). If content isn't already cached, the CDN retrieves it from the origin server.

  • Edge Servers: Located in multiple geographic locations (also known as Points of Presence – PoPs), edge servers cache and deliver content to users. By serving content closer to users, they reduce latency and improve load times.

  • CDN Network: The infrastructure that connects edge servers with the origin server. It uses optimized protocols like Anycast and BGP to route traffic efficiently.

  • Caching Mechanism: The CDN automatically stores static content (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, images, videos, etc.) on edge servers. You can configure cache TTL (Time to Live) to control how long content is stored before refreshing it.

  • Load Balancer: Distributes incoming requests across multiple edge servers to handle high traffic volumes without bottlenecks or crashes.

  • DNS Server: When a user accesses a website, the CDN’s DNS identifies the nearest edge server and redirects the request, reducing DNS lookup time and improving response speed.

CDN in action: Step-by-Step

Here’s what happens when a user accesses a website that uses a CDN:

  1. The user requests content (e.g., loading a webpage or streaming a video).

  2. The CDN’s DNS identifies the nearest edge server based on the user’s location.

  3. The edge server checks its cache:

    • If the content is cached, it's delivered instantly.

    • If not, the edge server requests it from the origin server.

  4. The origin server sends the content back to the edge server, which also stores it in cache for future requests.

  5. The edge server delivers the content to the user — significantly faster than if the user had connected directly to the origin server.

Why use a CDN?

In today’s digital era, a Content Delivery Network is more than a nice-to-have — it’s a game-changing solution. By improving website speed, enhancing user experience, and offering built-in protection against cyber threats, a CDN empowers businesses to engage users globally with unmatched reliability and performance.

Why use a CDN?
  • Optimize Website Performance: EVG Cloud’s CDN solution enhances website performance by leveraging an advanced edge server system built on 100% SSD storage and a cutting-edge TCP stack. Powered by Anycast IP technology, intelligent latency-based routing, and the latest protocols such as HTTP/2, HTTP/3, Brotli compression, and TLS 1.3, this CDN significantly reduces data transmission time and accelerates page load speed. Additionally, by offloading traffic from the origin server, it saves bandwidth and optimizes infrastructure costs.

  • Enhance User Experience: The CDN automatically compresses assets, optimizes HTML, and adapts image/video quality based on the user's network conditions. This drastically reduces data size while maintaining sharp visual quality, ensuring a smooth, seamless experience across all devices—which in turn reduces bounce rates.

  • Multi-Layered Website Security: Going beyond traditional content distribution, EVG Cloud’s modern CDN includes multi-CNAME support, free SSL, and Web Application Firewall (WAF). It provides distributed threat detection and mitigation, especially for DDoS attacks, effectively safeguarding your website.

  • SEO Optimization: A fast website is a ranking factor on Google. By reducing page load time to under 2 seconds—the golden standard for search engine optimization—EVG Cloud’s CDN helps improve search engine visibility by 20–30%, making it a strategic asset in building competitive digital advantage.

  • Seamless Integration & Management: EVG Cloud provides an intuitive dashboard for real-time performance monitoring. A powerful API suite allows easy integration into your existing systems, ensuring that your CDN operations are as efficient as your business demands.

  • Global Infrastructure for Market Expansion: With over 110 Tbps of bandwidth capacity and Points of Presence (PoPs) across Asia, North America, Europe, Australia, and Africa, EVG Cloud’s CDN enables your business to reach global audiences quickly and reliably.

  • Cost-Efficiency: Choose from flexible pricing models based on actual data usage, customized for businesses of all sizes—from startups to large enterprises. This pay-as-you-grow model ensures maximum performance at optimized costs, without overprovisioning resources.

  • 24/7 Expert Support: Our experienced technical support team is available 24/7 to help resolve issues and maintain system stability, so your digital operations run without interruption.

CDN Solution

E-Commerce

In e-commerce, speed and reliability directly impact conversion rates. EVG Cloud’s CDN delivers product images, promotional videos, and static content from the nearest server to users, minimizing latency. With built-in SSL/TLS encryption, DDoS protection, and WAF, the platform ensures both performance and security. Major e-commerce platforms like Shopee, Lazada, and Tiki use CDN to maintain flawless shopping experiences—especially during peak events like Black Friday or Lunar New Year sales.

Media & Entertainment

Streaming platforms rely on CDN to deliver high-quality content to millions of users simultaneously. By caching videos, music, and movies at edge servers, CDN reduces bandwidth load and prevents buffering. Support for Adaptive Bitrate Streaming (ABR) ensures video quality adjusts to each user’s network speed, delivering buffer-free playback even on slow connections. CDN also enables low-latency live streaming for OTT platforms, ideal for broadcasting sports, concerts, or virtual conferences.

Gaming

In gaming, latency is critical. EVG Cloud’s CDN minimizes ping by delivering game updates, graphic files, and media assets from the nearest edge server, creating a smoother, more responsive gaming experience.

Education

Online learning platforms and LMS systems require reliable content delivery for video lectures, documents, and assessments. EVG Cloud’s CDN ensures consistent access—even in areas with weak internet infrastructure—while also supporting live streaming for webinars, classes, and virtual events. Integrated data security features protect educational content from unauthorized distribution.

Finance & Banking

Speed and security are top priorities in finance. EVG Cloud’s CDN accelerates web and mobile banking applications, reducing wait times during transactions such as fund transfers or bill payments. At the same time, it fortifies security through SSL encryption, DDoS mitigation, and bot protection, preventing cyberattacks and data breaches.

Healthcare

With the growing adoption of telehealth services, CDN has become a crucial enabler for real-time, secure medical interactions. EVG Cloud supports telemedicine apps, hospital management systems (HIS), and electronic health record (EHR) platforms, ensuring fast, secure delivery of sensitive health data while maintaining compliance with data protection standards.
